What to look for in a drive
The verified manual specifies a volume of 64 GB, a steady write speed of 4 MB / s and compatibility with USB 2.0. Compare the constant rate of writing: a large number on the package can refer to reading or short-term peak. Additional volume is useful for storing rollers.
Prepare it without losing files
Before formatting, copy the desired data to another device: the procedure erases the content. Formatting the car creates exFAT and the TeslaCam folder. If you’re preparing a drive on a computer, check the supported file system and the TeslaCam location at the root; NTFS is not supported in this version of the manual.
Test it in the car
Use a USB port that supports data: some of the connectors are power-only. After connecting, wait for recognition and make sure that recording functions are available. Regularly transfer important videos separately and vacate space: a filled media and cyclical deletion of old events make it an unreliable long-term archive.
Keep in mind: Having a USB port alone doesn’t confirm video recording support; check the vehicle’s trim.
