Practical guide
Winter driving: preconditioning, ice and range
Allow time to precondition the car; cold affects charging, energy use and regenerative braking.
Guide updated 2 Oct 2026 · revision 1
Start before leaving home
Prepare the cabin and battery in advance via climate or schedule. In extreme cold, Tesla offers to focus on 30-45 minutes, but the time depends on the conditions. When icing, use defrosting and check visibility before starting movement.
Avoid forcing frozen parts
Pens, mirrors, glass and wipers can freeze. Do not apply tools and excessive force to the door handle. If ice is expected, consider turning the mirrors off in advance. Before you travel, check your tires: In the cold, the pressure decreases and seasonal conditions may require suitable tires or chains.
Plan the route
Cold increases consumption and may limit recovery until the battery warms up. Leave an extra supply of charge and operate smoothly. When traveling to the Supercharger, use the navigation of the car: it prepares the battery for charging. A very short drive to the station may not give you enough time to prepare.
Keep in mind: Do not start with a closed ice view and do not count on the usual power of recovery.
