Practical guide
Tesla will not charge or charges slowly
Check the vehicle status and charge-port light, then rule out a schedule, battery conditioning and equipment limits in order.

Start with the vehicle status
Open the Charging screen and read the message beside current power and time. If a connection is shown but charging has not started, check whether a later start time is scheduled: a blue charge-port light means the cable is connected without active charging, including when a schedule is in effect. After plugging in, wait for the light to pulse green. That is more reliable than leaving before confirming that the session began. The charge level can sit slightly below its limit: the car resumes charging after some energy has been used, rather than necessarily starting again at once.
Allow for battery conditioning
After the connector is inserted, the car may need to heat or cool the battery, so charging may not begin immediately. A blue light can also indicate that the car is waiting for a scheduled start. At a fast charger, a cold battery may also accept less power at first; navigating to the selected fast charger can help the car prepare the battery when that feature is available. The time shown to the charge limit is an estimate, not a promise of constant power.
Check the available power
The screen shows current charging power and the available charging current. On AC, a blinking amber port light means reduced current. Make sure the connector is fully inserted and the cable or station is supplying power; do not raise the current beyond what a home circuit can safely support. At a fast charger, power changes as charging progresses and may be shared with a neighbouring stall. Check the set limit and estimated time as well as speed; those details help distinguish a normal power limit from a session that has stopped.
If there is an alert or red light
Read the touchscreen alert: a red charge-port light means a fault was detected and charging stopped. Reconnecting is appropriate only if the cable and connector are intact and dry; do not keep using damaged equipment. If the alert returns, charging still will not start after checking the schedule and connection, or the problem occurs at multiple working stations, save the alert text and contact Tesla Service or the charging-network operator.
Keep in mind: Do not touch exposed contacts or use a cable with damaged insulation. Follow the vehicle alert when the port light is red.
