Practical guide
Charging cable will not release
Stop the session and use the vehicle or app release controls. Do not force the connector.

Stop charging
First open the vehicle Charging screen. Select Stop Charging if the session is still active and wait for the status to update. At a public station, end the session using the method provided by that station or its app. The cable latch remains locked while the car is charging; this is the normal protection against unplugging.
Unlock the port normally
Make sure the car is unlocked or recognizes your key. In the touchscreen Charging menu, use the charge-port unlock command; in the Tesla app, tap the lightning icon on the vehicle status screen. If the command is unavailable, check that the app is connected to the correct car and that the phone has network access or is close enough for Bluetooth. The vehicle control does not replace ending a third-party station session separately when its operator requires that.
Remove the connector without force
Once the screen or app confirms release, hold the handle straight and withdraw the connector without sideways pressure. The sequence can differ at a public station using an adapter, so follow the station prompts and the manual for your exact vehicle and adapter. Do not pry at the latch or pull the cable itself; that can damage the port, cable or charging equipment. Do not close the charge-port door by hand or leave the cable’s weight against it if the car will not release the connector.
If the normal control does not work
Confirm that charging has stopped, the car is unlocked and the app status is current. If the connector is frozen, do not pull hard. The manuals recommend using app preconditioning to thaw the latch; on some vehicles, the charge-port heater turns on with the rear defroster. Not every car has this heater. The 2025+ Model Y Europe manual specifically limits Controls → Service → Inlet Heater to Korea, Japan and North America, so EU owners should not assume this control is available. If the port still will not release, the cable is damaged, or orange high-voltage components are visible, stop and contact Tesla Roadside Assistance or Service. Emergency release methods depend on the exact vehicle manual and are not universal. After the connector is removed, the port door closes automatically; do not press it by hand to make it close sooner.
Keep in mind: Do not pull hard or follow a generic online emergency-cable procedure. Stop and call for help if anything is damaged or orange conductors are visible.
