Practical guide
Choosing a charge limit
Follow the charge-limit recommendation shown in your car and check it before a trip.
Guide updated 2 Oct 2026 · revision 1
Follow the car’s recommendation
In Model 3 2017–2023 and 2024+ in the parking lot, open Controls → Charging or press the battery icon. Guidelines for everyday charging and travel are also available on the Tesla app. Select the limit with a slider. This setting is valid for immediate charging, and when charging on schedule.
Prepare for a long trip
If additional margin is needed, when moving the slider above the daily recommendation, a proposal may appear to increase the limit once. Selecting this option returns the previous value after charging. Before the next session, check the screen: for the current location, the car can also remember a separate limit.
Check that charging started
After connecting, look at the charging status and estimated time to the selected level. A slight lag from the limit after a long stay with the cable can be normal: a new cycle begins after a sufficient reduction in charge. The red indicator requires checking the warning on the screen.
Keep in mind: Follow your car’s recommendations: The manual does not specify the total daily percentage.
