Tesla will not charge: checks to make before calling service

A safe sequence for checking a Model 3 or Model Y: settings, AC and DC charging, the station and connector, and warning signs that mean you should stop.

Region: Europe.
Models: Model 3 and Model Y.
According to Tesla’s European guidelines; menu names and procedures vary by year, hardware and software. Priority is given to vehicle messages and its management. Descriptions of the workshops are taken from their sites and do not confirm the quality of the repairs or the languages of communication.

First fix the symptom

Do not start with multiple reconnections. Write down the exact notification text and code, time, battery percentage, point type (home AC, public AC or fast DC), its number and state of the charging port indicator. Take a picture of the screen and the station. On the car, open Controls → Service → Notifications: There may be additional recent charging reports.

Check the wording with the manual of your car in the menu or on the Tesla website. Port configuration, equipment, and prompting order vary by country, year of release, and Model 3/Y version; the same symptom alone does not prove a battery malfunction.

  • The blue indicator usually means that the cable is connected, but charging is not going, for example, because of the schedule; flashing blue – the car is still communicating with the charging.
  • Blinking green means charging, permanent green means completing it; amber or red requires checking the message on the screen. Check the indicator values with the management of your car.

Check the settings and start conditions

See if the specified charge limit is reached and if the schedule is not included in the car or at the station. With the blue indicator, check the scheduled start time. At a public point, complete authorization with a card, app or station screen: some devices do not start a session until it is confirmed.

Once connected, there may be a pause if the car needs to heat or cool the battery. Watch the status on the screen for a few minutes, but focus on notification and guidance rather than waiting indefinitely.

Inspect the connector and latch without effort

Stop the session before disconnecting. Examine the outside of the cable, plug and accessible part of the port: whether there is moisture, foreign object or visible damage. Do not insert tools inside or wipe contacts. If everything is solid and dry, just insert the plug once until the end; a skewed or incompletely inserted connector may not click.

If the charging cable does not let go, stop pulling and do not rock it. Make sure on the screen that charging is stopped, then use the usual handle button, screen or app. The manual release cable is provided only for certain situations and generations: use it only according to the instructions of your car after stopping charging.

Separate the problem of AC, DC and the station itself

Home socket, Mobile Connector, and Wall Connector are AC charging; Supercharger and other fast stations typically give DC. If a secure test is available, compare one other knowingly serviceable point or cable of the same type. If the car is charging there, a problem of the source station, cable or power is more likely; it is a benchmark for diagnosis, not a final output.

If AC is not working and DC is working, it narrows down the cause to AC power, equipment, or the corresponding section of the car, but does not confirm that all systems are working. If only one public charging point fails, save its number and error code and contact the operator. If you have a home installation with missing indicators, a message of connection overheating, or a recurring failure, stop trying and call a qualified electrician. Do not open the Wall Connector, socket, adapter or car wiring.

When to stop checking

Do not connect or use equipment with cracks, melting, bare wires or damaged contacts. In case of smoke, sparkling, smell of burning or unusual strong heat, do not touch the plug and cable. If this can be done without approaching danger, stop the session with staff management; step back and call the local emergency service in case of smoke or fire. Further actions are coordinated with the emergency service.

Stop self-attempts and book a Tesla Service appointment if the alert requires maintenance, the problem is repeated at multiple independent points, or the port/connector is damaged. When instructed to stop, follow the message of the car; check the possibility of further travel with the help service. Do not work with a high-voltage battery, charging port or power wiring yourself.

What to transfer to the service

Clear baseline data helps to start by checking the cause, rather than repeating steps already taken. Tell the make and version of the equipment where the failure occurs and what two different points showed if such a test was safely performed.

  • What is the exact text and warning code? When did this happen and at what level of charge?
  • This is AC or DC; which cable, adapter and station were used? Are there any signs or signals on the station?
  • Does the failure occur at another point? Does the vehicle charge with another type of equipment?
  • Is there a photo of the indicator/damage and when did the symptom start?
  • Do I need to stop the trip or can the service be safely accessed; is mobile assistance available?
