Latvia recognizes Tesla Assisted Driving approval; activation is still pending

On October 26, Latvia’s CSDD recognized the provisional EU type approval Tesla received from the Dutch RDW. This permits use in Latvia, not an EU-wide rollout; Tesla has not announced an activation date.

Region: Latvia; national recognition of a provisional EU approval.
Models: Tesla models listed in the RDW type approval, with compatible software.
Checked against the Latvian Ministry of Transport announcement of October 26, 2026, Tesla Europe’s announcement, and Latvian public broadcaster LSM. Approval in Latvia is not EU-wide authorization; availability depends on vehicle models, software and Tesla activation.

On October 26, 2026, Latvia’s Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) recognized the provisional EU type approval issued by the Dutch approval authority RDW for Tesla’s driver-assistance system. In Europe, Tesla calls it Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD); it was previously called Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

The decision permits use of the system in Latvia under the recognized approval, but does not mean an automatic launch across the EU. Tesla Europe said the Latvian rollout would begin later. Latvian public broadcaster LSM reports that owners could not yet activate the system at the time of publication: Tesla must enable it, and no activation date has been announced.

CSDD’s decision is based on RDW documentation and information from Tesla about system changes. These include reducing the permitted speed-limit offset, automatically resetting a manually set offset after each trip, and strengthening driver monitoring. The system is Level 2 driver assistance: it can follow a set route, brake, steer, change lanes and navigate intersections, but the driver must continuously watch the road and be ready to take control immediately. The driver remains responsible for obeying traffic rules and for the vehicle’s actions; using a smartphone while driving is not allowed. Access to the system may be temporarily disabled if the driver ignores warnings.

Approval applies only to Tesla models listed in the RDW type approval and equipped with compatible software. CSDD warns that snow, dirt and road salt can interfere with the system; it may perform less reliably on gravel roads and unexpectedly hand control back to the driver. This is a national approval for the European version of the system; it does not mean North American features or capabilities are available in Latvia.
