Used Tesla inspection: a step-by-step Model 3 and Model Y checklist

A step-by-step plan for checking documents and equipment, inspecting the car, taking a test drive, trying charging and deciding when to seek a specialist inspection.

Region: Europe.
Models: Model 3 · Model Y.
Editorial manual based on official Tesla sources vetted on October 2, 2026. Checklists and conditional calculations are prepared by the editorial board; check the functions with a specific car.

Before the visit: documents, VIN and exact version

Ask for VIN, mileage, date of first registration, country of original sale and photos of registration documents. Check the VIN on the car with documents and contract; specify the number of owners and who is entitled to sell the car. This is a basic verification of the consistency of information, not a conclusion about legal purity: the procedure for verifying documents depends on the country of the transaction.

Before the trip, ask the seller to list the exact version: Model 3 or Model Y, year of release and model year, rear or all-wheel drive, declared range, wheels, number of seats, equipment and paid features. Ask for proof of promise with your car screen, documents, or available Tesla Account. The model name and VIN alone do not confirm the exact capacity, chemistry or battery condition. Do not make a conclusion about the battery by the VIN decoder, the name of the complete set or one mileage number on a full charge.

Generations matter. Tesla’s European guidelines are divided, for example, into Model 3 2017–2023 and 2024+, Model Y 2020–2024 and 2025+. Design details, program menus and feature availability have changed; the registration date may not coincide with the model year. Open the manual for the actual car, and check the menu and equipment on its screen. This is in line with Tesla’s note that features vary by configuration and region.

Do not require the battery to be discharged for inspection. In advance, agree on the time, test trip route, access to the charging station and the possibility of independent inspection.

At the car: bodywork, cabin and alerts

Examine the body in daylight and on a clean dry surface. Compare the shades of adjacent panels, gaps, glass and lighting; note scratches, dents, corrosion, repair marks and fogging of lights. Check the opening of doors, windows, trunks and charging port. For the Model Y, check the rear door and seat folding separately if this is important for your version. Repair marks alone do not prove a bad repair: ask for repair invoices and photos, then decide if a body specialist is needed.

Do not climb under the car, do not lift it with a regular or random jack and do not remove protection. Look outside at the accessible edges of the bottom and sills as far as a safe standing position allows; note noticeable bumps, deformities, wet marks and damage. Do not touch the orange cables, connectors, covers and parts of the high-voltage system. If there is a suspicion of damage to the bottom, battery, flooding or poor-quality repairs, stop self-checking and order an inspection on a suitable lift from a specialist familiar with Tesla.

Check the tires on all four wheels: the sameness of the appropriate type on the axles, cracks, cuts, bulges, uneven wear and traces of repair. Compare wear on the left and right and on the inner/outer edge if visible. Tesla publishes separate recommendations on tires and maintenance; the condition of a particular car is still evaluated by a specialist. Through the spokes, examine the discs and brakes for gross damage, severe corrosion or a clear difference of sides. Check the belts, windows, climate, heating, cameras, direction indicators, headlights, wipers, sound and seat adjustments.

Ask to show the car screen when power is turned on and the section with warnings. Take pictures of active messages and ask them to explain each, even if the seller calls it temporary. Write down whether the message is repeated during the inspection or during the trip. Do not clear errors and do not start service procedures for the sake of demonstration: save the original messages for the specialist.

Test trip and charging

The driver is the owner or admitted driver, with valid insurance and within the rules of the country. Choose a regular route with a city section and a safe road where you can check braking and handling without sharp maneuvers. Make sure that the car does not pull to the side, the steering wheel does not vibrate, there are no bangs of suspension, grinding and unexpected warnings. Check the smooth acceleration and deceleration, recovery operation, conventional brakes, parking chamber and the parking assistance available on this car. Write down a brief manifestation of sound or features of recovery, but do not make a diagnosis by ear.

If possible, connect the car to an available AC station or charger suitable for the region and connector of the car. Watch if the connection is recognized, if the session is displayed, and if charging starts. Do not change electrical connections or use damaged or unknown equipment. AC testing is useful for household charging and connection of the charging port with equipment; it does not prove maximum power or complete serviceability of the charging system.

With a verified DC station available, you can see separately whether a session begins and if it remains error-free. Speed depends on battery level and temperature, station and conditions; a short sample does not confirm advertised peak charging power. If fast charging is critical for your routes, ask a Tesla specialist to check this item. Tesla has warnings where AC or third-party fast charging may be limited, so don’t take the assurance “Supercharger works” as confirmation of all charging methods.

Battery: Reasonable expectations from inspection

The driving range on the screen is a calculated estimate, not an independent measurement of the residual capacity. Kilometers next to the battery indicator are calculated at a standardised energy-consumption rate; the forecast in the Energy app and the actual mileage depend on the flow rate and travel conditions. Do not compare these values with WLTP as the same. Compare not one photo, and available vehicle data, history of use and the result of profile diagnosis. Do not apply one percent degradation as a universal threshold for all ages, batteries and scenarios.

Some Model 3 and Model Y have a Battery Health screen with a battery management system evaluation; a separate Battery Health Test may not be available. In the published guides for the respective versions, the test requires an AC connection, can last up to 24 hours, and can only start when the vehicle conditions are met. Tesla recommends it when questioning stored energy. This is not a quick test in the parking lot: agree it in advance, do not start for a deal without the necessary conditions and do not leave people in the car for the duration of the test. If the seller claims a recent result, ask for a screen and date.

Failure or inability to run a regular test does not equal a diagnosis of a faulty battery. Ask the service to check the cause if there are warnings of a high-voltage battery or thermosystem, unusual charge reduction, power loss, charging problems, or inconsistency of the seller's statements. A high-voltage system has no self-maintenance parts; do not agree to open the battery or disassemble high-voltage components for inspection.

Service history and questionsionsionsionsionsions of the seller

Ask for Tesla and independent services bills and orders: date, mileage, complaint, work done, parts and repair warranty. Compare them with the odometer and the story of the seller. A Maintenance Summary is useful if available, but Tesla indicates that the owner is responsible for the accuracy of records, especially after independent or self-maintenance. An empty screen does not prove the absence of repair; an oral narrative does not replace a document.

Clarify crashes, body and bottom repairs, contact with water or salt, battery and drive unit replacements, recurring errors, charging problems, tires and suspension. Ask what malfunctions remain, why the car is being sold and whether the seller agrees to an independent diagnosis. For each paid feature, ask to confirm that it is available on that car now; do not include a subscription, benefit, or promised transfer in the price without documentary proof.

Transfer of keys and digital access

Before the transaction, discuss transferring the car to the Tesla Account: the official procedure for buying from a third party requires a VIN and supporting documents, and adding the owner to the app gives access to the features of the car. Schedule the transfer along with the transfer and make sure the seller has confirmed all the keys and removed its own access after the transaction is completed. Tesla warns that some subscriptions, upgrades and benefits may not be portable; check the specific promise separately. The procedure in the annex does not replace the documents of sale, registration or local formalities.

Checklist of decision

Mark each item as “verified,” “need to be confirmed,” or “not satisfied.” This is an editorial checklist to discuss the deal.

  • VIN, documents and seller’s right to sell are checked.
  • Version, equipment, mileage and history confirmed.
  • The condition of the body and bottom is assessed; doubts are disassembled by a specialist.
  • Tires, brakes, cabin and warnings checked.
  • The trip and required AC/DC sessions went without unexplained symptoms.
  • Battery and availability of full-time tests have been tested in the agreed volume.
  • The cost of known works and questions before payment are recorded.
  • Keys, account and transfer terms are agreed.

Stop the inspection and contact the Tesla Service or an independent electric vehicle specialist if there is an active battery or brake warning, underbody damage, flood marks, burning smell, leakage, charging failure, unstable steering or braking, severe vibration, VIN doubt, or the seller's refusal to show documents and agree on a reasonable diagnosis. The official service can report available recording and diagnostic options; availability depends on the country and type of malfunction. Before a written explanation of a serious symptom, do not make a decision only on the promise of the seller.
