How to choose a Tesla battery diagnostics provider
Estimated range is not a battery-health diagnosis. Learn which checks are available and what to ask a Model 3 or Model Y specialist before booking.
Models: Model 3 and Model Y.
According to current European Model 3/Y guidelines, check the availability of Battery Health and the test on your car. Evaluation of the driving range, stored capacity and troubleshooting solve different problems. The services of the workshops are listed on their websites; quality and certification have not been checked by the editorial board.
First, determine what is bothering you.
Diagnosis isn’t just about buying Tesla. The cause may be a repeated warning about a high-voltage system, an unusual power limitation, a sudden interruption of charging, or a noticeable change in car behavior. Write down when the symptom appears: after night parking, in the cold, during fast charging or on a trip. Keep the warning text and information about recent events, but do not try to disassemble the battery or conduct high voltage checks.
If the only question is why the screen is 100 percent smaller than it used to be, it's not a breakdown diagnosis. The estimate is influenced by the specific battery, its age and operation; the range is also related to the estimated consumption. Such photos cannot be reliably matched without data on the version of the car and battery. Actual mileage is further affected by weather, speed and travel conditions.
Driving range, Battery Health and troubleshooting are different things
Tesla advises to take the displayed range as a general guide. Current European Model 3 and Model Y guides describe Battery Health’s assessment: it uses data from battery management systems and compares expected energy storage with cars of the same type, age and use. This assessment does not equal verification of the specific cause of the failure. The availability of the built-in test varies by car; Tesla indicates it can take up to 24 hours when connected to a suitable charge. After completion, the screen driving range may be recalculated.
Service diagnostics answers another question: is there a malfunction and where to look for it? This can include reading car errors, analyzing available battery and charging system data, and, if necessary, measuring by a specialist. One percent of the SoH itself does not explain why the warning occurred, and the absence of a printout error does not prove the ideal state of all components.
Clarify the method before recording
Ask the service to name the procedure in simple terms: Tesla’s full-time assessment, reading codes and parameters, independent battery test, or advanced symptom diagnosis. Find out if it’s right for your Model 3 or Model Y, year of production and battery type. If a certificate test is offered, ask what is being measured, what are the limitations of the method, and whether a full charging cycle or trip is needed. Do not consider the name of the device or a beautiful form as proof of accuracy without explaining the technique.
Ask in advance to state the conditions and duration: the charge level at the reception, the need to leave the car, the charging equipment, the possible energy consumption, the effect of temperature and whether the car will be available for travel on that day. These details help to understand exactly what will be measured and whether the result can be compared with future tests.
A good result is a clear written report.
Before work, ask if they will issue a report with the identification of the car and the test. It is useful to see the date, model and configuration of the battery, mileage, software version, charge level, temperature or other significant conditions, the method used and its limitations. To search for a malfunction, ask to indicate the detected codes, which ones are active or stored, which data was checked and on what the conclusion is based. If the SoH score is given, specify what the percentage is compared with and what the error or scope of the method is.
Separate the conclusions “measured”, “code found” and “presumed cause”. A repair estimate is a separate next step: ask to link the proposed work to a specific result and agree on the cost before the repair. The promise to name the exact SoH only by phone or by screenshot of the driving range is an excuse to look for a more transparent service.
Safety and qualifications are important in HV jobs
If the task is limited to reading data, ask who is conducting the diagnosis and what is included in the service. If the service is going to perform measurements or work on a high-voltage battery, specify the confirmed specialist training, the applicable standard or qualification in this country, the procedure for insulation of the workplace and insurance coverage. Ask for the boundary between diagnosis and battery opening: the latter should not appear in the order without a separate explanation and approval.
Also check the warranty status of the car and the terms of reference in Tesla. Independent diagnostics may be convenient, but promises of retaining warranty or service authority check against documents and regulations for your country and specific repairs. With an active battery or thermosystem alert, follow the vehicle's directions first and contact Tesla via the app; do not run the test if the car reports conditions are not met.
What to Ask Before Your Visit
- Are you working with my Model 3/Y generation and this battery configuration?
- Is it capacity assessment, fault finding, or both? What method?
- What conditions are needed and how long will it take to check?
- What will be in the written report and what are the limitations of the result?
- Who performs HV measurements and what qualifications can you confirm?
- How much does the diagnosis cost, what is paid separately and do you agree on repairs before work begins?
- Should I call Tesla first because of my warning?
Verify the service with the task, not with the advertising promise
There are different examples in the catalog: MTechniek in Alkmaar describes reading errors and checking HV batteries, and EV-Repair in Wellserbrook specifies the AVILOO battery test along with fault diagnosis. These are descriptions of services on the websites of the companies themselves, not an editorial quality assessment or recommendation. Clarify the relevance of the service, price, record, methodology and support of your version of Tesla directly at the service before the trip.
