How to compare Tesla repair estimates

Compare the same task

Two sums say little if the workshops count different works. One could include cause search, disassembly and calibration, the other could only replace the intended part. First, ask each party to describe in writing what they will check and correct, and then compare the composition of the offer and the result after taxes.

Formulate the symptom without diagnosis: when it appears, how often, what messages are visible on the screen and after what events occurred. For example: “After the night parking, a warning about the climate control system appears; disappears after the restart.” Do not ask to replace the item you mentioned if the reason is not yet confirmed.

Transmit the same source data

In one letter, specify the model, year, mileage, country of registration and convenient city of service. Add a VIN directly to the selected service if you need it for details; do not publish it openly. Attach a photo or short video warning and describe whether it is safe to go on your own. In case of damage after an accident, report whether the pillows worked, whether there is a leak or damage to the glass.

Ask to indicate separately whether the price is a preliminary distance estimate or an offer after inspection. Clarify what will be required for an accurate calculation: on-site diagnosis, disassembly, geometry check or additional calibration.

Tesla and independent services have different stages of evaluation

For Tesla Service, the process is officially described through the application: the owner creates an application, the team studies the information and can conduct a remote diagnosis, then publishes an initial assessment in the application. The cost needs to be reviewed and confirmed before work; if the estimate is marked as outdated, Tesla advises contacting the service team for clarification. This description applies to the Tesla service and does not specify how an independent workshop works.

An independent workshop can ask you to bring the car first and pay for the diagnosis, and prepare an accurate estimate after the inspection. This does not mean that all services work in the same way: agree in advance the price of the diagnosis, what is included in it and whether its cost will be deducted from the repair. Ask not to proceed to additional work without your written confirmation of the new amount.

Compare positions, not just the outcome

Break down each sentence into diagnosis, details, labor, and additional surgeries. Clarify the currency, tax rate and whether the tax is included in the total. If the parts are called by a generic word like “kit”, ask for a transcript and quantity. For glass, bodywork, and removal of high-voltage components, check if calibration, consumables, and result checks are taken into account.

If you don’t have a line, mark it as unknown rather than thinking it’s free or unnecessary. Ask for a range or condition under which a surcharge will appear. Two estimates are more convenient to lead to one table: the same work in rows, services in columns, next to exceptions and questions.

• Diagnosis: what is checked and how much does it cost if the repair does not take place?
• Details: new, restored or used; who supplies them?
• Work: Are hours and operations listed separately? Is the tax included?
• Supplements: How will the service request additional work?

Compare terms and conditions

Clarify the nearest date of reception, approximate duration after diagnosis and what depends on the delivery time of parts. Ask if evacuation, car storage and re-checking are paid. For body repair, specify who will coordinate the work with the insurer if you plan to apply for the policy.

Ask in writing to specify the work guarantee and the specified details: term, covered cases, procedure for treatment and exclusion. Conditions may vary by country, workshop, detail and type of repair; treat the response as part of a specific offer rather than as a general rule for Europe. If the car is still under Tesla warranties or there is a separate warranty, check the conditions of your car with Tesla before agreeing an independent repair.

Copy the template and send it to multiple services by replacing the fields in square brackets. Do not compare the answer without inspection with the final estimate after disassembly: ask what points are preliminary and when the result will be confirmed.

If something is missing, ask the question in writing and save the answer along with the estimate.
