Home charging a Tesla: equipment, power, time and cost

A practical guide to Tesla home charging for a private home and shared parking: equipment selection, installation approval, energy and cost calculation, power management and work acceptance.

Region: Europe.
Models: Model 3 · Model Y.
Editorial manual based on official Tesla sources vetted on October 2, 2026. Checklists and conditional calculations are prepared by the editorial board; check the functions with a specific car.

First, evaluate your script.

Start with the usual schedule: where the car stands at night, how many hours it is connected and how many kilometers you drive per day. A home point is usually needed to make up for the daily consumption during the parking time, rather than necessarily charging the battery from scratch. To calculate, use your own average consumption from the car, not just the passport indicator.

In a private home, discuss with a qualified installer the distance from the parking space to a suitable connection location, the length of the cable route, the condition of the existing installation and the available power. Clarify where you can safely place the device, how the cable will reach the port without tension and whether it remains convenient passage and access to equipment. Do not choose power only by the advertising maximum of the charger.

At the general parking, first find out from the owner of the premises, the management organization or the community of owners who has the right to coordinate the work, what information and installation scheme they want to get, whether it is possible to maintain a dedicated circuit or install a meter, how to pay for consumption and who will service the equipment. Ask to identify the person responsible for accessing the electrical panel and shared cable tracks. This is a list of issues to negotiate, not a statement about the requirements of the law: procedures differ between countries, buildings and treaties.

Mobile Connector or Wall Connector

Mobile Connector is a portable device with adapters for different suitable outlets. It can be convenient if a suitable point is already there, you need a backup option or the car is charged in small portions during a long parking. Available adapters and power depend on kit and country. The Tesla Portugal page lists up to 3kW for Schuko, up to 2.3kW for a British or Swiss adapter, 3.7kW for a 16A blue adapter and 7.4kW for a 32A blue adapter; these are examples of adapter capabilities, not the promise of power in any installation.

The Wall Connector is suitable for regular charging and gives permanent cable, Wi-Fi, control and statistics in the application, and is also compatible with most electric vehicles with a suitable connector. Clarify the available features for your country and installation.

The maximum on the case is not equal to the power of a particular session. The speed is limited simultaneously by the power point and its setting, the capabilities of the on-board charger of the car and the current charging conditions. Tesla’s European Wall Connector supports a variety of single-phase and three-phase power options; for many Teslas, Portugal’s support page provides reference points of up to 7.4 kW for single-phase and up to 11 kW for three-phase. A particular version of the car may have a lower limit. Check the limit of your car on its screen and request a calculation from the installer.

How much energy and time are needed

Example for planning: at a run of 60 km per day and a flow rate of 18 kWh per 100 km, the battery will consume approximately 60 km × 18 kWh / 100 km = 10.8 kWh. If we assume the efficiency of power transfer from the network to the battery is 90%, the network will require 10.8 / 0.90 = 12 kWh. Real efficiency is changing, so this is a teaching assumption, not a characteristic of every Tesla or installation.

To supply 12 kWh, the ideal time is power from the grid divided by power:

  • At 2.3 kW, about 5.2 hours.
  • At 3.7 kW, about 3.2 hours.
  • At 7.4 kW, about 1.6 hours.
  • At 11 kW, about 1.1 hours.

This is a simplified assessment without pauses, car restrictions, power changes and battery preparation. When choosing equipment, focus on whether your usual daily need is filled in the available parking time.

Estimate the cost by energy taken from the network: kWh from the network × your tariff of € / kWh. At a conditional tariff of 0.20 € / kWh, an approximate 12 kWh will cost 2.40 euros per day. For 30 identical days, that's 72 euros. This is only the variable cost of energy: installation, equipment, fixed payments and possible contract modification are not included. The tariff here is for arithmetic only; it does not describe current prices in Portugal or any other country. If the meter charges for the time of day, substitute the price of those hours when actually charging.

Connection time is not always equal to charging time. If the car is connected for eight hours, but the schedule only allows charging in a four-hour tariff window, check if there is enough available power for the right energy. For a rough estimate, divide the need for kWh from the network by the available power in kW; for planning leave a margin for changes in power and conditions.

Available power and load management

Before ordering, ask the installer to indicate in writing the expected capacity for your car and the location, what building or home installation constraints are taken into account, and what power will remain available when other large consumers operate simultaneously. Separately, discuss the allocated or contractual power capacity, if it limits the simultaneous load; the order of its change depends on the country and the supplier.

Ask if dynamic load management is appropriate: it can change the charging power depending on the current consumption of the facility. For shared parking, check out how limited power is distributed among multiple cars and what happens if new users join. Tesla also describes the management of the Wall Connector group; network settings and acceptable configuration must be confirmed by the guide installer for the European version of the device.

Ask to compare options with different available power and rate them by your night window and daily mileage. Higher declared power alone does not guarantee a shorter session: the car can take less and the overall load can temporarily reduce the supply. If the final estimate still covers the daily requirement, moderate power may be sufficient.

Do not lay or remodel the power wiring yourself and do not choose protective devices on the advice of the general guide. A qualified professional should evaluate the circuit, grounding, protection, cross-section and wiring route, compliance with local regulations and documentation of specific equipment.

What to approve and check during installation

Before the work, you will receive from the installer a description of the scope of work and the expected result. Clarify the exact model of the device and connector, the expected power and phase, the estimated current limitation, the method of energy accounting and whether the device is put into operation. For shared parking, separately record the owner's or control party's permission, connection points, cable route, restoration of common surfaces and cost allocation.

Check if the cable reaches the port without tension, if its route is protected and if it does not interfere with neighboring places. To control the Wall Connector via the app, check Wi-Fi at the installation point; the Mobile Connector is managed via the car and app.

Before completing the work, ask the specialist to show the actual charging session and explain the device indication. Check that the car starts and finishes charging, shows the expected power, and the necessary control is available in the application. If schedules apply, check together one test scenario: connection, set start or departure time, and reaching the set limit. Make sure that the owner has received the necessary documents, device registration data and instructions in case of error.

Write down the agreed power limit and installer contact. If an error or unusual heating occurs, stop charging and contact a specialist or support Tesla. If the power is below the estimated, first specify the current limitations of the car, schedule and load management.

Schedule and charge limit

If your contract does offer a cheaper watch, use the in-car charging schedule or available Wall Connector features. First, check which schedule sets the start time and which is the desired departure time: the names and availability of features may vary by software and region. After changing the tariff or schedule, re-check that the car has time to charge before departure.

Set the charge limit on the prompt on your Tesla screen or in the app. Tesla explicitly points out that the recommendations depend on the battery installed and differ for different options. Do not carry a percentage from the board for another model or battery. For a trip, you can temporarily increase the limit according to the recommendations of the car, and then return the usual setting.

If the rate does not change in time, choose a convenient window and limit that corresponds to your mode. You don’t need to reach 100% every night if your car is recommending a different daily limit. Cold, prolonged parking and work of climatic functions can affect the energy supply.
