Choosing between Model 3 and Model Y: versions and budget

Step-by-step selection of the European Model 3 or Model Y: budget with all costs, RWD and Long Range, travel, luggage, charging and comparison of specific ads.

Region: Europe.
Models: Model 3 · Model Y.
Editorial manual based on official Tesla sources vetted on October 2, 2026. Checklists and conditional calculations are prepared by the editorial board; check the functions with a specific car.

Start with three trips and a total budget.

Write down a regular work day, the longest regular itinerary, and a full-load trip. Each requires distance, passengers and luggage, parking time, affordable charging and an allowable number of stops. Separately note the mandatory conditions: child seat, wheelchair, entrance to the house, garage, towing or the need for all-wheel drive. This will result in a verifiable task for the car, rather than choosing the largest number in the ad.

First set a total cost limit, then determine the price of the car. It includes purchase, pre-deal inspection, clearance and applicable local fees, insurance, necessary tires and works, charging equipment with installation. Ask the prices of these items for a specific car and address. Preserve for known malfunctions by estimate, not by arbitrary percentage of the price of Tesla.

A conditional example, not a market estimate: with a total limit of 30,000 euros and a car price of 27,000 euros, 3,000 euros remains for all the costs listed. If the confirmed proposals exceed the balance, the candidate does not fit into the budget. More expensive equipment should not displace the mandatory diagnosis or necessary repairs. Compare the totals for two or three real offers on one page.

Model 3 or Model Y: Check boarding and loading

The Model 3 has a separate rear trunk cover and the Model Y has a lifting rear door. Take for inspection the most inconvenient object: a wheelchair, suitcase, carrying or sports bag. Look not only at the published liters: the opening, the height of the threshold, the place under the floor and the ability to get things when the car is loaded are important. Check the permissible weight of the cargo on the documents of a particular car.

Set up the driver’s seat for yourself and sit in the back. Install your car seat according to its instructions and the manual of the car, check the passenger's boarding, access to the belt and the place of the legs. The presence and mechanism of folding seats depend on the execution. Do not postpone the demonstration of one Model Y for all years and cabin options.

Measure the garage with mirrors, open doors and boot lift. On the test trip, appreciate the view, noise, suspension and ease of getting in on the familiar route. In our editorial list of candidates, Model 3 falls if its boarding and trunk close the tasks; Model Y - if its body gives the desired advantage in boarding and transporting things. The choice should be confirmed by a personal breakdown of both cars.

RWD, Long Range and Performance solve different tasks

RWD stands for rear-wheel drive. Long Range does not automatically mean four-wheel drive: Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD are found in European ranges. At Performance, separately check the characteristics, wheels and equipment of the chosen generation. The name of the complete set without a year, market, drive and wheel size is not enough for comparison. These combinations are listed in Tesla's official European consumption data.

  • Limited budget and predictable home charging trips: Start with a suitable RWD and check if it closes routes. Evaluate the cost through specific benefits to you.
  • Regular long-distance trips: Add Long Range to the shortlist and compare the stop plan on the same route. Consider the initial charge, season, speed and load.
  • All-wheel drive: Look for a confirmed AWD, not just Long Range. For winter trips, check the appropriate tires and local requirements separately; all-wheel drive does not replace this check.
  • Priority: Dynamics: Consider Performance after evaluating comfort, tires, insurance, and the total cost of the selected car. Clarify the conditions under which dispersal is declared, instead of comparing advertising figures without reservations.

The chemistry and usable capacity of the battery are not reliably defined by the same name RWD or Long Range. If this is an important condition of purchase, ask for confirmation on a particular car. Take the daily charging mode from its interface and manual.

How to know if there is enough driving range

WLTP helps to compare certified versions, but does not guarantee such a result in winter or on the motorway. Weather, speed, wheels, load and climate change energy consumption. Screen estimate of remaining range and route forecast are also not identical to WLTP. For a used car, a battery assessment is required separately.

Check the longest regular route in both directions, including charging at your destination. Compare the same initial conditions and leave a working stock corresponding to the weather and station availability. If the trip can be performed only in perfect weather or necessarily free single charge, this option requires an additional plan. This is an editorial convenience criterion, not a Tesla-defined residual charge rate.

Without charging at home or work, first assess where, when and at what rate you will charge. Check real access hours, compatibility and spare station. A large battery can change the frequency of stops, but by itself does not create a convenient charging place. For long-distance trips, compare the entire route: Tesla indicates that Supercharging speed depends on the battery, charge level, temperature and configuration, and by the end of the session usually decreases.

New body or more equipped car of the previous years

The year of first registration does not equal a generation and does not describe all equipment. Announcements of the same year may have different performances. For the Model 3, compare the former body and Highland, for the Model Y - the former body and Juniper through our separate parsings, then check the specific instance.

Make a short list of mandatory options and mark each during the inspection: type of control, comfort of seats, heating, cameras, heating, necessary screens, trunk mechanism. If the function is not confirmed, leave it in the “clarify” column. The mileage, repair history, battery condition and surface balance are checked separately from the age of the body. More recent registration does not in itself replace inspection.

Three candidate cards instead of an endless list

For each sentence, fill in the same card:

  • Model, generation, exact execution, drive, wheels, release date and first registration.
  • Price and general budget with inspection, registration, insurance, charging and known works.
  • Daily and long-distance trips: where to charge, how many stops and what restrictions.
  • Boarding, luggage, garage and mandatory options: checked in person or still require confirmation.
  • Maintenance history, battery status, warnings and questions for independent service.

Weed out a car that does not pass a mandatory condition or general budget. Choose between the remaining ones according to proven advantages: ease of loading, route, condition and understandable expenses. The final step is to examine the selected copy on the checklist and written answers to the remaining questions. This is a guide for the European Model 3 and Model Y; the features of the Model S and Model X require separate validation.
