RWD or Long Range: how to choose a Tesla

First, write out the exact versions of the two ads. RWD stands for rear-wheel drive. Long Range is the name of the version; it is both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Therefore, the comparison of “RWD vs. Long Range” without specifying the drive, year of release and wheels is incomplete.

The choice of European Model 3 and Model Y. The trim names and equipment have changed: the characteristics of the current model do not automatically describe a used car. Checked 2 October 2026.

What to compareRWDLong Range
What does the name mean?First, separate the drive from the name of the configuration.Rear-wheel drive. The designation itself does not indicate the capacity and chemistry of the battery. The official European table includes Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD.
Range of travelTemperature, speed, tires and battery status change the real range.Match the exact version’s range with your normal route and charging access.Compare a specific range, not just the Long Range.
Fast charging.Speed depends on charge level, temperature, battery and configuration.Check the supported power and charging under the same conditions.Large peak power alone does not guarantee a shorter stop.
Charging modeA reference point is a recommendation on the charging screen of a particular car.Do not charge up to 100% by the RWD designation alone.Do not choose a universal limit only by the Long Range designation.

Start with your route.

Choose a regular winter day and the most frequent long-distance trip. Compare where you can charge, what stock you want to leave for arrival and whether you are ready for an additional stop. Then check these conditions on a specific version of the car. This is a practical way to estimate the surcharge; there is no universal “correct” configuration.

Check the battery separately from the nameplate

For the 2017–2023 Model 3 family, the guide describes LFP validation through “Management → Software → More Vehicle Information.” This is a manual for the family, not a way to determine the battery of any Tesla version. Ask for a screen and paperwork to replace the battery, if any.

Compare two copies

The condition, repair history, the balance of the warranty on the documents, the wheels and the equipment you need deserve a separate line next to the price. On the test trip, check the noise, operation of the climate system and ease of control. To diagnose the battery and inspect the bottom, agree with a Tesla specialist; the indication of kilometers on the screen is not a full conclusion about the battery.

How to decide

Editorial pointers when comparing two listings.

RWD

Consider RWD if a particular car covers your routes and is fit for condition, equipment and budget.

Long Range

Consider Long Range if the confirmed characteristics of the selected instance give the right margin on long trips. Check the full drive separately.
